Thunder Kicks Off Breast Cancer Awareness Month
by afussell
Mount St. Mary Academy hosted a Pink Soccer Game to promote breast cancer awareness and raise funds to find a cure. Mount St. Mary's varsity soccer team played the Buffalo Academy of the Sacred Heart on Wednesday, September 28 at 4:30 p.m. at Expressway Diamonds. Though the Thunder were defeated 2-0, they raised over $300 for Roswell Park Cancer Insititute's breast cancer research and prevention efforts.
The Pink Soccer Game kicked off national breast cancer awareness month. Both teams wore pink-lettered jerseys to show their solidarity in the fight. Sacred Heart's players gifted the Thunder with pink carnations at the start of the game, while MSM presented the SHA team with pink wristbands at the beginning of the match.
Particularly touching was one Mountie's tribute to her mom. Anna Jones, MSM senior, presented her mother, Patricia, with a bouquet of pink roses prior to kick off. Patricia Jones has recently waged her own battle with breast cancer.
Despite the rainy weather, fans lined the sidelines in cheery pink to show their spirit for this cause. A pink lemonade and bake sale, supported by both teams, helped keep morale high throughout the muddy matchup.
"Sadly, we all know someone whose life has been affected by breast cancer," says MSM coach, Marissa Dauria. "The only way that we can make a difference is to join forces and all be one team against this terrible disease."
