Mount St. Mary Academy Raises Funds for Haitian Earthquake Victims
Mount St. Mary Academy students raised funds for the victims of the January 12th earthquake in Haiti. Moved by the suffering of thousands of Haitians, the school organized a fundraiser and prayer service on January 22.
On Friday, Mount St. Mary students who traditionally wear uniforms sponsored a “Jeans Day” where all students were allowed to dress out of uniform for a cost. Students were asked to contribute as much money as they could afford for the privilege, as well as raise funds from parents and relatives.
“Here in the U.S. and certainly in our WNY area, these are very tough economic times indeed,” said Principal Dawn Riggie. “However, our students are very aware that these poor people in Haiti have absolutely nothing and are in desperate need of all that we can manage to get to them.”
The faculty of Mount St. Mary is aiding fundraising efforts with a bake sale offered to students. Faculty members provided an abundance of cookies, cupcakes, doughnuts and other baked goods on sale throughout the day in the Student Dining Hall.
All proceeds raised from the student and faculty activities will benefit Catholic Relief Services (http://crs.org/), an organization which has been operated in Haiti for many years and is ideally situated to mobilize support after the recent catastrophe. Individuals wishing to make a donation to the Haitian relief effort can do so through the Catholic Relief Services website or telephone line, 1-800-736-3467.
Mount St. Mary Academy, founded by the Sisters of St. Mary of Namur, is an all-girls, Catholic college-preparatory high school located at 3756 Delaware Avenue in Kenmore. Mount St. Mary’s is ranked in the top 5% of all Western New York high schools.
